Somebody once asked me is it safe to have big dogs and little kids together?
There's not really an easy answer to that. My reply was, "Depends". There are many factors to consider when it comes to that question:
What kind of big dog?
Different dogs have different temperaments. E.g. a Labrador Retriever is extremely easy going and is famous for putting up with kid torment, however the same cannot be said for a Doberman who is known for needing more patience and attention.
Even when you answer this first question, it can also very much depend on the next question as to whether it would be a good fit:
Are you a dominant force at home?
What I mean by this is, are you a "Pack Leader" - as phrased by Cesar Millan. By not being in an alpha position you are leaving that job open for a dog to possibly fill. This is one of the most important factors when deciding on a dog at home - and around kids (big dogs and little kids). Our German Shepherd, Meech (pictured below) was very much aware that I am the boss. We had absolutely ZERO problems with her and the kids.
What are your kids like?
Are your kids rambunctious? Rough? Quiet? Gentle? These things can all make a difference to the initial question of - is it ok to have big dogs and little kids together. Also, to throw another factor to the equation - what are your kids friends like? Your kids can be gentle and quiet but if they have a friend come over that is more energetic and rough - that needs to be considered.
We have had a variety of dogs, big and small. I have to say, the bigger dogs actually worked out better with the kids - the smaller dogs have been less tolerant. The best by far has been the German Shepherd - Meech.
Do you have any thoughts about this topic? It's a topic that i'm passionate about, that I am often asked regarding my choice of family pets!
What do you think?
