Recipe walkthrough: Instructions
This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Step 1: Spread the tuna creations mixture on the tortilla, a little away from the edges.
- Step 2: Sprinkle with the chopped cucumber and red onion.
- Step 3: Add the shredded lettuce and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Step 4: Roll the tortilla up and wrap in plastic wrap tightly.
- Step 5: Place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour, then slice into 1" slices cutting off the end of each tortilla.
Hint: The one hour refrigeration time helps the tuna pinwheels to hold their shape and not unroll on the plate. A minimum of one hour is best. Don't leave them longer than a day though as they can get soggy.
Recipe variations and substitute ideas
- Cream Cheese - spread softened cream cheese first.
- Cheddar Cheese - sprinkle some on top.
- Dill Weed - add a little fresh dill to the tuna salad.
- Lemon Juice - for a little acidity, add a little lemon zest too.
- Green Onion - in place of the red onion.
- Parsley - for a more herby taste.
- Carrots - for added crunch and sweetness.
- Eggs - some people like to add boiled eggs to their tuna salad.
- Hummus - adds more flavor to spread this around the tortilla first. Also helps to hold together the pinwheel shape.

Not much of anything is needed here, except maybe a chopping board to slice the pinwheels.
How to store leftovers
The tuna pinwheels can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Any longer than that and it'll start getting soggy.
Mel's kitchen notes
I like to use the Tuna Creations because the tuna has so much great flavor. You could make your own tuna salad though, if you prefer.
