What makes this recipe so yummy

  • It's super easy and quick to make.
  • The best spicy butter sauce you have eaten, trust me. Perfect for a seafood boil.
  • It's such a flexible, flavorful sauce, you could really dip anything into it. I even like dipping some sweet corn on the cob and boiled red potatoes in it, it has such a rich flavor.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

ingredients all laid out showing what you need to make a cajun butter sauce.

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

  • Step 1: Add the butter to a small saucepan and turn on a medium heat to melt the butter.
  • Step 2: Add all the seasonings (except the salt and pepper) and the flour to the melted butter, stir well and bring to a boil.
  • Step 3: Turn the heat down to a simmer and cook simmering for 5 minutes.

Hint: If you want a thinner sauce then thin out the Cajun garlic butter sauce by adding a little more butter. If you want to thicken some more add a little more flour.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Red Pepper Flakes - add some more spice.
  • Old Bay Seasoning - try swapping out the Creole Seasoning for some Old Bay.
  • Chili Powder - add some for more heat.
  • Hot Sauce - instead of Tabasco use your favorite hot sauce, use a little bit or a lot.
  • Lemon Pepper - add some of this seasoning if you want to try something different.
  • Brown Sugar - I've heard people adding brown sugar for some sweetness.
  • Lime Juice - in place of the lemon juice.
  • Olive Oil - could be added.
  • Cayenne - add a teaspoon cayenne pepper.

How to store leftovers

Once the butter has cooled it will thicken more. Almost become like a butter again. Pour the leftover sauce into an airtight container, or plastic bag to store in the refrigerator, for up to 1 week. For future use, just heat in the microwave for about 30-60 seconds.

Mel's kitchen notes

For best results I use a homemade Cajun seasoning (or Creole Seasoning). If you don't have this handy then using a brand like Tony Chacheres will be fine.
