Although I'm calling this Halloween Bark, it could be made any time really. The beautiful colors of fall are perfect all season long.

You could then change the colors to be green and red, for example, Christmas colors. It's really easy to change this up.

What makes this recipe so yummy

The white chocolate is the basis for the flavor of this recipe. Choose your favorite white chocolate - be as luxurious as you want!

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Overhead shot of some white chocolate chips, Reese's pieces and food color.

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

White chocolate chips in a mixing jug about to be melted.
Step 1 - Add the chocolate chips to a large mixing jug and microwave for 15 second blasts, stirring between until mostly melted, keep stirring.

Step 2 - Pour the melted white chocolate out onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper.
A hand squeezing out some food color onto white chocolate.
Step 3 - Squeeze the food color in droplets on the white chocolate (before it firms up).
A hand swirling through food color with a tooth pick.
Step 4 - Use a toothpick and make swirl patterns through the food color drops.
A hand sprinkling candy onto white chocolate.
Step 5 - Drop the Reese's Pieces onto the white chocolate (before it firms up). You may need to press the pieces into the chocolate a little.

Step 6 - Once the chocolate has firmed up, break up into pieces.

Hint: Use any colors, or candies to dress this bark up any way you choose.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

Following is a list of variations and alternate ideas for substitutes that you could play with in this recipe:

  • Chocolate - instead of plain white chocolate, you could get something like peanut butter chocolate or use dark chocolate. Use a decadent, luxurious white chocolate, or get the cheap stuff if it's not important to you.
  • Pretzels - you could get some broken up and sprinkle for some texture.
  • Candy Corn - a great idea for a fall treat. You could even use those little candy corn pumpkins.
  • Nuts - always a little contentious if you don't know who'll be eating the bark.
  • Sprinkles - find those Halloween colored sprinkles.
  • Candy Eyeballs - always a favorite.
  • Gummy Worms - we're getting crazy now, lol!

Like I said, my Halloween Bark I like to try to keep nice and elegant.... but you really could go as crazy as you like with the decorating for spooky season!

Recipe troubleshooting

A place to see any obvious issues that we encountered when testing this recipe for you:

  • The chocolate seized - it's super important not to overcook the chocolate. Only use 15 second bursts, and stir in between. If you are able you could use a double boiler on the stove, even mix in a little shortening to thin the chocolate a little.
  • The chocolate set before I could decorate - it's important to have everything ready to go when you melt that chocolate so you can work quickly. I didn't try this, but if you're in this situation, maybe you could try placing the baking sheet in a warmed oven to melt it again?

I just used a mixing jug to melt the white chocolate, then used a baking sheet with wax paper (you could use parchment paper).

I have a couple of links in the recipe card below if you want more information.

How to store leftovers

If you want to speed up the chocolate setting you could place in the refrigerator for a couple minutes.

If you have some leftover, you could store in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2 weeks.

Mel's kitchen notes

Push down on those little candies so that they seat nicely into the chocolate, it'll help stop them falling out.
