Amish Pear Honey has been passed down for many years. It started as a way to save fresh pears at the end of summer. Adding pineapples became popular later because it adds a bright, sweet taste that cooks down beautifully.

People make this recipe most in late summer and fall, when pears are ripe, but it also gets attention during the holidays because it tastes great on breakfast tables and dessert boards.

What makes my recipe so yummy?

The mix of pears and crushed pineapple gives the honey a deep fruit flavor you can't get anywhere else. The pears cook down soft and smooth, while the pineapple adds a fresh pop and natural sweetness. Cooking it low and slow brings everything together and makes a thick, glossy, honey-like spread.

Step 1 - Peel all the pear and remove the core. Chop into 1-2 inch pieces and add to a large heavy bottomed pot.

Step 2 - Add the sugar, lemon juice, and crushed pineapple, stir and cover. Cook for about 1 hour, until the pear pieces are soft and the 'syrup' has started to thicken.

Step 3 - Using a potato masher, mash the pieces of pear that have not already fallen apart.

Step 4 - Spoon pear honey mixture into hot sanitized mason jars, wipe the rims and seal tightly. Wait to hear the pop from the lids to confirm the jar of Amish Pear Honey is now air tight.

Hint: Drain the pineapple just a little. You want some juice for flavor, but not so much that your homemade pear honey turns watery.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

Following is a list of variations and alternate ideas for substitutes that you could play with in this recipe:

  • Spices - Add cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg for a warm fall taste.
  • Milder - Swap the crushed pineapple for diced apples if you want a milder flavor.
  • Depth of flavor - Add vanilla or almond extract for extra depth.
  • Molasses - Use brown sugar for a richer, caramel-like sweetness.
  • Heat - Stir in a little ginger for a bright, spicy kick.

Recipe troubleshooting

A place to see any obvious issues that we encountered when testing this recipe for you:

  • Too watery? - Cook it longer to let the extra liquid from the pineapple reduce.
  • Not thick enough after cooling? - Simmer again for a few minutes to tighten it up.
  • Too sweet? - Add a splash more lemon juice.
  • Burning on the bottom? - The heat is too high - keep it low and stir often.

How to store leftovers (Canning storage instructions)

If you processed your jars in a water bath, store the sealed jars in a cool, dark cabinet for up to one year. Once a jar is opened, keep in in the fridge and use within two weeks.

If you didn't can it, let the pear honey cool and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for about 10-14 days, or freeze it for up to 3 months.

Pineapple can change the cook time. Because it adds extra juice, your pear honey may need a little longer on the stove to thicken. Don't rush it. Let it cook down until it looks glossy and feels syrupy on the spoon.

Yes of course, just use more pears or apples.

Yes, you can use a stick blender or a food processor. You have to be super careful though, as the hot fruit can burn as it splashes.

  • 1 Dutch Oven
  • 1 Potato Masher
  • 1 Immersion Blender Optional
  • 9 Mason Jars, 8 oz Glass Jars

Ingredients

  • 18 Each Pears Ripe, peeled, cored and cut into 1-2" pieces
  • 1 (20 Ounce) Can Crushed Pineapples
  • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 7 Cups Granulated Sugar

Instructions

  • Peel and core the pears, than cut into 1-2" Pieces. Add to a large Dutch oven (or other heavy bottomed pot).
    18 Each Pears
  • Add the sugar, lemon juice and crushed pineapple.
    1 (20 Ounce) Can Crushed Pineapples, 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice, 7 Cups Granulated Sugar
  • Stir well to combine and turn on the heat. Continue to stir as the ingredients heat up. Cover and cook for about 1 hour, on a simmer.
  • Add some 8oz Mason Jars to a large pot and boil for 10 minutes. In another boil the lids.
  • Once the pears are tender and the liquid has thickened some, turn off the heat.
  • Taking a potato masher (or an immersion blender) - mash the ingredients until no lumps remain.
  • Drain the jars, then spoon the pear honey into each mason jar. Wash the rims of the jars with a wet paper towel then add the sanitized lids. If you wait 5-10 minutes you'll hear the lids of the jars pop as they seal.
  • Allow to cool at room temperature.

Notes

To be able to store at room temperature the mason jars will definitely need to be sealed correctly. This is evident after the jars have popped. You'll also be able to press on the top of mason jar, it will not be able to be pushed down (or won't pop back up).
Once a jar has been opened, it should be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
