- Using the instant pudding mix definitely makes a difference. Sure, you could make homemade pudding - but I think instant pudding is fine, especially when being mixed with other ingredients.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions
This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Step 1: Add the instant pudding and the cold milk to a large bowl and mix well with a whisk. Set in the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
- Step 2: In the meantime, add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla to the bowl of a stand mixer and beat until stiff peaks form.
- Step 3: Add the cream to a piping bag fitted with a 1M tip.
- Step 4: Add a layer of pudding mixture, banana slices, homemade whipped cream (chantilly cream) and vanilla wafers in a glass. Top with cream and crumbled vanilla wafers. For best results allow to sit in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes before serving - for the flavors of this wonderful dessert to come together.
Hint: Make sure to seal off the top of the glass so no air can get into the glass. As long as air cannot get to the sliced bananas they won't discolor. If you plan on adding slices of bananas to the top of the cream (for garnish) dip in lemon juice first.
Recipe variations and substitute ideas
- Cool Whip - instead of chantilly cream.
- Mini Vanilla Wafers - these baby nilla wafers work great too.
- Homemade pudding - make your own pudding for this recipe (with eggs and milk etc).
- Graham Crackers - make a graham cracker layer instead of vanilla wafer cookies.

I like to use a stand mixer most times in the kitchen, but if you don't have one, using an electric mixer, or hand mixer is fine.
You'll also need some glasses to present these banana pudding cups in, as well as some mixing bowls to mix the pudding.

How to store leftovers
If you find you have some leftovers, cover with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
Mel's kitchen notes
Make ahead in the individual glasses but don't add the topping. You can wrap tightly with a piece of plastic wrap and refrigerate (they taste better after sitting a few hours). Decorate when you're ready to serve.
Frequently asked questions: FAQs
The bananas that are not exposed to the air will not discolor as much as the banana slices that are exposed.
If you plan on decorating the top with banana slices, dip in a citrus juice, e.g. lemon juice, orange juice or pineapple juice.
Another perfect idea for individual banana pudding cups is using mason jars. If someone can't quite finish their dessert they can just screw the top on and save for later.
Definitely, you could use any kind of wafer or cake that you like. The wafers add a contrast in texture, so you definitely want something to be there.
