Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the hash browns for about 5-10 minutes, until golden brown then add to a 9x13" baking dish.

Hint: You can mix some of the cheese into the meat mixture, to add a little moisture, then sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Sesame Seeds - sprinkle some of these on top.
  • Thousand Island Dressing - you could use this instead of making the Big Mac Sauce.
  • Worcestershire Sauce - add a drop of this to the ground meat for a taste of umami.
  • Frozen Tater Tots - use crispy tater tots instead of hash browns, for a Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole.
  • Yellow Onions - instead of white onions.
  • Cream Cheese - Stir some of this into the ground beef mixture.
  • French Dressing - Use this instead of making the sauce.
  • Dill Pickle Relish - if you don't have sliced pickles.
  • White Vinegar - add this to the sauce if you don't have pickle juice.
  • Ground Chicken - you could make it a little healthier by using ground chicken or ground turkey.
  • French Fries - use these instead of hash browns.
  • Seasoning Salt - use this in place of the salt and pepper.
  • Heavy Cream - add a touch to the ground beef mixture.

How to store leftovers

Cover with aluminum foil (or place in an airtight container) and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

It will freeze well (without the toppings), store in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months.

Mel's kitchen notes

To reheat this Big Mac Casserole remove the toppings first. Reheating in the microwave will be best so as not to dry it out. Then add the toppings back.

I made this tonight and it was great! I don't like ketchup so I subbed for a different burger sauce and I used a carton of dehydrated hash browns instead of home fries since that's that I had. I would make this recipe again!
