🔄 Substitutions and Variations
- Russet Potatoes - although I favor Yukon gold potatoes for this recipe, russet potatoes also work well.
- Garlic Powder - for added flavor.
- Onion Powder - for added flavor.
- Chili Powder - for some spice.
- Hash Browns - instead of the sliced potatoes.
- Italian Seasoning - this gives a little more herby taste.
- Mozzarella Cheese - instead of the cheddar, or maybe with.
- Worcestershire Sauce - for that umami flavor.
- Ground Turkey - instead of the ground beef.
- Green Beans - add some fresh green beans, or just have a side of green beans.
- Olive Oil - you could use this to wipe down your casserole dish.
- Sweet Potatoes - instead of white potatoes.

I love my enameled cast iron casserole dish. It helps retain the heat after you take out of the oven nicely.
For slicing the potatoes nice and evenly you could use a mandolin slicer if you have one.

🧊 Storage
Once you have allowed this easy hamburger and potato casserole to cool completely cover with aluminum foil (or decant to an airtight container) and keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
It will freeze well too. Decant to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
💡 Tips
Expert Tip: I like to keep this recipe simple (for the kids) but it would taste extra special with added diced onions, garlic, spices etc.

Old Fashioned Hamburger Potato Casserole
With just a few ingredients this Hamburger Potato Casserole is one of our regulars for dinner time. Serious comfort food.
Ingredients
- 2lb Ground Beef
- 4lb Yellow Potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 12oz Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated
- 12oz Evaporated Milk
- 2 (10oz) Cans Cream of Mushroom Soup
- 2 teaspoons All Purpose Seasoning
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 13x9" Casserole Dish well.
- Brown the ground meat in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add a layer of potato slices on the bottom of the casserole dish and season.
- Sprinkle some cheese over the top of the potatoes.
- Sprinkle ⅓ of the ground meat, then repeat with another 2 layers.
- Mix the soup and evaporated milk with a whisk then pour over the layered ingredients. Lift with a fork here and there to allow the mixture to fall in-between the layers.
- Sprinkle with a little more cheese over the top.
- Grease a piece of aluminum foil then cover the hamburger potato casserole.
- Bake in the oven for 1 hour.
- Remove the foil and bake a further 30 minutes.
- Take out of the oven and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
After pouring the soup mixture over the ingredients it should fall and work it's way between the layers. You can help it with a fork though. You could also mix it before-hand and spoon between the layers as you're building the casserole.
Make it even more hamburger-like and dress with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and onions (if your family likes that).
