What makes this recipe so yummy

  • It's so easy yet so impressive.
  • The ingredients are inexpensive.
  • It's so cute - a really festive holiday appetizer.
  • You could actually make any shape - i.e. a Christmas Tree.
  • It's the perfect appetizer for any party.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Ingredients all laid out showing what would be needed to make a pull apart bread wreath.
  • Crescent Roll Dough Sheets
  • Gruyere Cheese
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Melted Butter
  • Garlic
  • Parsley
  • Sea Salt and Pepper
  • Favorite Dipping Sauce

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Step 1: Cut the crescent roll sheets on a lightly floured surface with a 2-½" cookie cutter. Make sure they're equal pieces.
  • Step 2: Mix the cheeses in a medium bowl and fill each dough circle with the mixed cheese and close up.
  • Step 3: Place the cheese filled dough balls on a parchment paper lined baking tray, around a ramekin dish (empty). In the shape of a wreath.
  • Step 4: Bake in a preheated oven for 18 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Step 5: Melt the butter in a small bowl and mix with garlic, parsley and salt and pepper.
  • Step 6: Brush tops of warm rolls with the garlic butter and fill the ramekin with your favorite sauce.

Hint: Use the off-cuts (dough pieces) from the crescent roll dough and cut little shapes to bake. I cut stars with mine. Or just roll up and bake.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Pizza Dough - instead of Crescent roll dough.
  • Garlic Powder - use this if you don't have any fresh garlic.
  • Poppy Seeds - sprinkle the dough with poppy seeds.
  • Sprigs of Rosemary - decorate with a few sprigs.
  • Cheese - use your favorite cheese.
  • Egg wash - brush egg wash on top of the rolls instead of butter.
  • Olive Oil - Brush with olive oil instead of butter.
  • Sweet Potatoes - try filling with mashed sweet potatoes.
  • Basil Pesto - this is delicious dipped in a little pesto.

You'll need a large baking sheet and a 2-½" cookie cutter. I have some affiliate links in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

If you don't have a cookie cutter, you could use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife.

You could make this recipe using a bundt pan.

How to store leftovers

Once you have finished serving at room temperature and you have some left, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You could also just wrap the whole thing with plastic wrap.

Mel's kitchen notes

For best results reheat in the oven. Reheating in the microwave will cause the bread to become soft.
