  • Green Food Color
  • Vegetable Shortening
  • Christmas Sprinkles

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Step 1: Melt the wafers in a double boiler, or in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, in short 30-second increments. Add the vegetable shortening to help with the consistency.
  • Step 2: Line a baking sheet with wax paper (or parchment paper), then dip an Oreo cookie into the white melted candy, half way. Lay flat on the wax paper, then repeat with the remaining cookies.
  • Step 3: Take the remaining white melted candy and add the green food color. Stir well then add to a piping bag with a #1 tip.
  • Step 4: Pipe a tree onto each cookie, then quickly sprinkle the sprinkles onto the green tree.

Hint: Using tweezers can really help place the star sprinkle just right on top of the tree as well as the brown sprinkle at the bottom for the trunk.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • White Chocolate Chips - instead of the candy melts.
  • Almond Bark - instead of the candy wafers.
  • Peppermint Oreos - or any other Oreo cookies really.
  • Green Candy Melts - Instead of coloring the remaining white, you could make more cookies and melt some green candy melts.
  • Candy Canes - Pipe candy canes on the cookies instead.
  • Golden Oreos - Use these instead of the dark.
  • Red Candy Melts - if you are going to make a candy cane.
  • White Chocolate Oreos - delicious alternative.
  • Oreo Balls - crumble up the Oreo cookies, make little truffle balls and decorate in the same way.

Mel's kitchen notes

You could use white chocolate instead of the candy wafers for an even richer flavor.

Notes

When adding the brown sprinkle, or the star on top of the tree I like to use a pair of tweezers. It can be quite delicate work and if you're like me, my fingers are not so delicate!
Before dipping into the melted candy brush off any crumbs that may be on the cookie, so as not to dirty up the white.
Use white chocolate if you prefer, instead of the melting wafers.
