I'm sure they're more popular around valentine's day, but I like to eat and make these cookies any time of year.

Even before the tiktok video went viral these heart-shaped jam cookies were a favorite.

What makes this recipe so yummy

  • They're actually easier to make than you'd think. This recipe does not require refrigeration which is even better. There are some sugar cookie doughs that need refrigeration to stop the spread.
  • The center of each cookie can be filled with any jam/preserve.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Ingredients laid out, needed to make the Tiktok Jam Heart Cookies recipe that inspired so many. TExt overlay over the ingredients.
  • Frozen Cherries
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Lime Juice
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Egg Yolk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Almond Extract
  • All purpose Flour
  • Cornstarch

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Step 1: Add the frozen cherries to a small pot with the granulated sugar and lime juice. Turn on medium-high heat and cook for about 20 minutes, until most of the fluid is gone and it has thickened up.
  • Step 2: Allow to cool then use a stick blender or regular blender to make the jam nice and smooth.
  • Step 3: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees f and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Step 4: Cream butter and powdered sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat until nice and creamy fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  • Step 5: Add the egg yolks one at a time then the vanilla and almond extracts. Mix well at medium speed.
  • Step 6: Add the flour and cornstarch and mix until well incorporated.
  • Step 7: Take 1 tablespoon of the cookie dough and roll into a ball then place on the baking sheet and using your thumb press down into the dough ball, twice creating a heart shape well.
  • Step 8: Fill with a little Jam then repeat with the remaining cookie dough balls, leaving a space of about 2-3" between each cookie.
  • Step 9: Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes then remove and allow to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Hint: If you find the dough to be too sticky add a little more flour and wet your hands.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Store-bought Jam - instead of homemade jam, speed things up a little and use a jar of store-bought jam.
  • Flavor of Jam - you could use a raspberry jam, or strawberry jam.
  • Brown Sugar - some people prefer to make their jam with this.
  • Almond Flour - you could sub for almond flour.

You'll need a small pot to make the jam in. Also, a stick blender or regular blender to smooth it out.

A stand mixer, or a hand mixer is also fine.

A baking sheet with parchment paper.

How to store leftovers

Store at room temperature in an airtight container, for one week.

These thumbprint cookies are freezable so if you intend to freeze them it's easier to do so without the jam filling. You could make a double batch and freeze the extra.

Mel's kitchen notes

If you find your thumb is a little on the big side you could use the butt end of a knife. Dip it in cornstarch to stop it sticking to the cookie dough.
