What makes this recipe so yummy

  • It's super easy to make in just a few minutes and it tastes just like you picked up the perfect grilled cheese at Starbucks.
  • It's so much cheaper to make at home, which is great in todays economy. Make it for a fraction of the cost.
  • This makes the best crispy grilled cheese sandwich. It takes it to a whole new level.
  • This crispy sandwich tastes divine dipped into tomato soup.
  • The outside of the bread has a crispy cheese coating. It's part of what makes it.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make a Starbucks grilled cheese recipe, with text overlay.
  • Thick Sourdough Bread
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Sliced Cheddar Cheese
  • Sliced Provolone Cheese

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

A collage of three images showing a Starbucks grilled cheese recipe instructions.
  • Step 1: Lay slices of the cheese in between two slices of bread.
  • Step 2: In a small bowl mix the butter and parmesan cheese.
  • Step 3: Spread on one side of the sandwich.
A starbucks grilled cheese in a grill pan.
  • Step 4: Place in a hot grill pan, over medium heat, butter side down and cook for a few minutes until toasty. While cooking add some parmesan butter spread over the top slice.
  • Step 5: Flip the grilled cheese and cook until golden brown on that side and the cheese has all melted. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.

Hint: Although I use a grill pan as I find it's the best way, you could use a regular frying pan or even cook in a toaster oven or air fryer.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Mozzarella Cheese - instead of Provolone. Starbucks does in fact use mozzarella, not provolone (I just prefer the taste of provolone).
  • White Cheddar Cheese - instead of the regular yellow cheddar. (Again, this is what Starbucks uses).
  • Dehydrated Garlic - this is used as a sprinkle in their recipe. You can add a sprinkle of garlic powder.
  • Cheese Slices - You could use all kinds of cheese - whichever you prefer. Monterey Jack is another favorite of mine.
  • White Bread - instead of sourdough, or I bet brioche would be good too.

I use a grill pan to make my grilled cheese sandwiches, but you could use a regular pan. I also used a small bowl to mix the parmesan butter in.

I have an affiliate link in the recipe card below for a great grill pan.

How to store leftovers

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, like a ziploc bag, for up to 5 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.

Mel's kitchen notes

If you don't like the parmesan crust, you could just use salted butter instead.

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

Why didn't my cheese melt?

You must have had the heat too high. It's best to keep it at medium to medium-high. That way the cheese has a chance to get hot enough to melt, but the bread doesn't get toasted too quickly.

Equipment

  • ESLITE LIFE 9.5 Inch Nonstick Grill Pan

Ingredients

  • 6 Slices Sourdough Bread
  • ½ Cup Unsalted Butter softened
  • ½ Cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
  • 9 Slices Provolone Cheese
  • 6 Slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese

Instructions

  • Add 3 slices of provolone and 2 slices of cheddar to the inside of 2 slices of sourdough bread.
6 Slices Sourdough Bread, 9 Slices Provolone Cheese, 6 Slices Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • Mix the butter and parmesan cheese in a small bowl, then spread some over one side of the sandwich.
½ Cup Unsalted Butter, ½ Cup Parmesan Cheese
  • Add to a heated grill pan, on medium-high heat, butter side down. Spread more butter on the top slice. Cook for 3 minutes, or until toasted nicely on the bottom, then flip.
  • Toast the other side for another 3 minutes. The cheese should have melted in this time.
  • Repeat with the other grilled cheese sandwiches.

Notes

Starbucks like to use mozzarella and white cheddar on their sandwich. I tend to prefer provolone's flavor. You could use mozzarella though.
The bread I got was very big, so a whole sandwich at that size is probably too much for some. This is why I have it listed as having 6 servings. It's probably more like 4-6.
