This kind of pasta salad is usually more common during the summer months, as it is a cold salad.

We could eat it year round though, that's how much we enjoy it.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Sour Cream - instead of buttermilk.
  • Green Peppers - it's common to see chopped green bell pepper or red peppers.
  • Parmesan Cheese - sprinkle some of this in there.
  • Red Onion - for more flavor and crunch.
  • Ranch Dressing - use this instead of the ranch seasoning mix and buttermilk.
  • Tender Artichoke Hearts - this would taste good.
  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese - grate some of this in there.
  • Blue Cheese - crumbled into the salad.
  • Tortilla Chips - for some texture crunch.
  • Chicken Breasts - chopped, instead of the ham.
  • Garlic Salt - for added flavor.
  • Fresh Broccoli - in small florets.

How to store leftovers

Store this copycat Ruby Tuesday ham and pasta salad recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Due to the use of mayonnaise this recipe will not thaw too well, it will end up with a weird texture, so I wouldn't recommend it be frozen.

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

What is Ruby Tuesday?

Ruby Tuesday is a well known American restaurant chain, popular for their salad bar and hamburgers.

Is it ok to rinse the cooked pasta?

For a cold pasta salad yes. You don't want the sauce/dressing to become to thick and sticky. It's common not to want to wash cooked pasta in hot dishes like mac and cheese.
