What makes this recipe so yummy

  • Fresh Salsa is the best thing you'll ever taste, I can't explain it. The ingredients are so simple yet the flavors compliment each other so well.
  • The consistency is perfect as a dip, or even as a topping (think tacos or nachos), stuffing or salad.
  • The longer the dish sits, it will create more of its own liquid and will just get better.
  • Homemade salsa fresca is really easy and it'll make you look like a star.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make a salsa fresca recipe.
  • Fresh Tomatoes
  • Red Onion
  • Fresh Lime Juice
  • Jalapenos
  • Fresh Cilantro
  • Salt and Pepper

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

A collage of four images showing how to make a salsa fresca recipe.
  • Step 1: Chop all the ingredients to as uniform a size as possible.
  • Step 2: Add to a mixing bowl.
  • Step 3: Squeeze the lime juice all over and add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Step 4: Stir together.

  • Allow to rest at room temperature.

Expert Tip: Allowing the dip to sit at room temperature for a while before 'dipping-in' will create much more flavor and a better texture as the ingredients marry together. It's not totally necessary, but will give you a much better Salsa Fresca!

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Garlic - for added flavors.
  • Onions - white onion, green onions, or yellow onions will work.
  • Fruits - Mango or pineapple salsa work well.
  • Avocado - for more of a guacamole vibe.
  • Serrano Chiles - for more heat.
  • Cucumber - for added freshness.
  • Vinegar - for a little more tang.
  • Olive Oil - if you like more fluid.
  • Eggs - this will change up the recipe completely though.

How to store leftovers

Store leftover salsa fresca in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 days. Any longer than that and it'll get a little too mushy.

You can freeze it, but it will freeze better earlier, as the softer it gets the weirder the texture after thawing. Freeze for up to 3 months in a freezer safe container.

Mel's kitchen notes

  • The fresher the ingredients the better it will taste. Use the most ripe tomatoes you can get.
  • Don't forego the salt, it will enhance the flavors.
  • Allowing the dip to rest before eating will increase the incredible flavors.
  • Use only the flesh of the tomatoes, not the seeds and juices (or it will make the dip too watery.

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

Is Salsa Fresca the same as Pico de Gallo?

Yes, it is the same recipe.

What's the difference between salsa and salsa fresca?

Salsa is usually made with cooked ingredients. Salsa Fresca (as the name implies) is fresh uncooked ingredients.
