The first time I came across these tasty little morsels at Copelands of New Orleans, a famous chain of restaurants in Louisiana.

They serve these with a yummy spinach artichoke dip. I wanted to make these to go with my Crawfish Dip though, they're perfect for any favorite dip.

Step 7: Using a slotted spoon remove from the hot oil and place on a baking sheet lined with paper towels in a single layer, to drain.

Hint: Make sure to fry in batches so that the temperature of the oil doesn't drop too much, also it ensures the cooked pasta doesn't stick together while frying.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Seasoned Breadcrumbs - instead of plain bread crumbs you could use Italian seasoning type.
  • Sour Cream - use sour cream in place of the heavy cream for a deeper flavor.
  • Black Pepper - try adding to the seasoning.
  • Italian Dressing - Instead of a cream and egg mixture to dredge try using Italian dressing instead.
  • Taco Seasoning - give these bow ties a Mexican flavor and use Taco seasoning instead.
  • Olive oil - make a little healthier by shallow frying in olive oil.
  • Cream Cheese - soften cream cheese and mix with a little milk instead of the cream and egg.
  • Red pepper flakes - if you like some heat add red pepper flakes to the crumb.
  • Sesame Seeds - add sesame seeds to the breadcrumbs.
  • Spicy Creole Seasoning - you can get this seasoning in a more bold, spicy flavor.
  • Fresh Herbs - add your favorite to the crumbs.

Necessary gear: Equipment

I use my Dutch Oven for frying, as it can be a nice even heat. It's great for frying. You could use an electric fryer though if you prefer.

I have some affiliate links in the recipe card below, for the equipment I used to make this fried bowtie pasta recipe

How to store leftovers

Store in an airtight container with a little paper towel to avoid moisture, store in the refrigerator. To reheat, I have found best results using an air fryer. Or you could use an oven at a high temperature for a few minutes.

Mel's kitchen notes

Don't forget about this fried pasta recipe when you have leftover pasta. It works great for any shape pasta (maybe except spaghetti).

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

Can you fry pasta noodles?

Definitely. As long as they're cooked first they fry beautifully.

How do you make air fried pasta?

Similar to this recipe, prepare the pasta exactly the same as the cooking process above. Heat your air fryer to 400°F, spray the basket with cooking spray first then spray the coated noodles a little. Air fry for 5 minutes for perfect little air fryer pasta chips.

What should I serve with these fried bowtie pasta treats?

You could offer a dipping sauce, like a marinara sauce or pasta sauce. Or a dip like spinach dip, cheese dip, or my favorite - a crawfish dip.

Equipment

  • Glass Mixing Bowls
  • Frying Spatula
  • Dutch Oven

Ingredients

  • 16 Ounces Bowtie Pasta
  • ½ Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 2 Each Large Eggs
  • ½ Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 2 Cups Plain Breadcrumbs
  • 3 Tablespoons Creole Seasoning
  • 1 Cup Parmesan Cheese
  • Canola Oil

Instructions

  • Add pasta to boiling water, cook for 8-10 minutes (until al dente) then drain.
    16 Ounces Bowtie Pasta
  • Place on a tray with paper towels and pat until all bowties are dry.
  • In a large bowl add the dry bowtie pasta and add the flour, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix well so all bowties are coated evenly.
½ Cup All Purpose Flour, 1 teaspoon Onion Powder, ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • In two large mixing bowls, add the eggs and cream to one and the breadcrumbs, parmesan and seasoning to the other. Mix both bowls well.
2 Each Large Eggs, ½ Cup Heavy Whipping Cream, 2 Cups Plain Breadcrumbs, 3 Tablespoons Creole Seasoning, 1 Cup Parmesan Cheese
  • First pass the bowtie pasta through the cream mixture then coat in the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Heat the cooking oil to 350°F and fry the bowties in batches. Each batch will only need about 3 minutes of cooking time each.
    Canola Oil
  • Remove from the hot oil and place on a tray lined with paper towels to drain.

Notes

Fry in batches, if you add too many bowties to the oil it will cool the oil down too much. Also, the pasta may stick together. For this amount of bowties I cooked in 4 batches of 3 minutes each.
