What makes this recipe so yummy

  • It doesn't often happen in my house, as my son is a doughnut freak. Every now and again though, something happens that I end up with some leftover doughnuts. This recipe is great for using up any leftover donuts.
  • Other than the Krispy Kreme donuts the other ingredients you should have in your pantry.
  • It makes a great treat for brunch and the kids love it.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

A collage of four images showing how to make bread pudding out of krispy kreme doughnuts.
  • Step 1: Cut the doughnuts up into 6 (bite-size pieces). Add to a 9x13" greased baking dish.
  • Step 2: In a large bowl, mix the milk, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and condensed milk. Mix well with a whisk.
  • Step 3: Pour this custard mixture over the top of donuts.
  • Step 4: Press down with the back of a spoon to make sure all doughnut pieces have been soaked in the custard mixture. Allow to soak for about 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated oven for 40-45 minutes.

  • Step 5: Add butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and vanilla extract to a small pot and apply medium heat.
  • Step 6: Mix well with a whisk. Once all granules have melted, cut a slice of the bread pudding then pour a little of this warm sauce over the top.

Hint: The staler the doughnuts the better. Of course, not to the point that it starts to grow stuff, but a good 3 days is great! It's a great way to use up those stale Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Raisins - add half a cup of raisins, or golden raisins.
  • Pecans - stir some into the bread pudding mixture before baking.
  • Butter Rum Sauce - Drizzle this over the top.
  • Egg Yolks - add a few extra yolks for richness of the custard.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream - add a scoop of ice cream instead of the sauce. Or both.
  • Fruit Cocktail - drain the fluid then add a little of this to the bread pudding mixture.
  • Breakfast Casserole - sweet breakfasts with some bacon in the mix is great.
  • Ground Cinnamon - a sprinkle of this in the doughnut mixture is fabulous.

How to store leftovers

Once the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding has cooled completely, wrap in aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Or decant to a safer container, an airtight container, and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Mel's kitchen notes

If you find you only have 1 or 2 doughnuts leftover, freeze them until you have enough to make this dessert.
