  • Cheddar Cheese - regular sharp cheddar, or white cheddar.
  • Chicken Broth - instead of the milk.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup - instead of mushroom.
  • Parmesan Cheese - for added cheese flavor.
  • Monterey Jack - if you prefer.
  • Cheese Sauce - you could use a cheese sauce instead.
  • Fresh Mushrooms - for more fresh ingredient.

Mel's kitchen notes

Make ahead - Prepare up to the step right before you cook in the oven, then cover with foil and refrigerate. When you're ready, remove from the refrigerator to allow to warm up somewhat, while the oven heats. Then continue the recipe steps.

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

Which is better in a green bean casserole, fresh, frozen or canned green beans?

Fresh green beans are always going to have more flavor. However, if I were to have to choose between canned or frozen, I would choose frozen. I find canned green beans to be a little too soft and full of sodium.

Should I make green bean casserole the night before?

As mentioned earlier, you can make this recipe ahead by preparing up to the point right before you'd put into the oven. Then cover and refrigerate. It can taste better like this too, it gives time for the flavors to marry together.
