It was released in Korea back in 2021 for a limited time, as part of the BTS Meal. (You know, that South Korean boy band.... they had a whole McDonald's meal named after them).

It's not available any more, but fans really loved it for its smoky, spicy, tangy flavor. This homemade McDonald's Cajun Sauce recipe tastes just like the real deal - maybe even better.

What makes this recipe so yummy

It's got that bold Cajun flavor McDonald's made famous during the BTS Meal in Korea and the Philippines, with a rich base of mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup that gives it that fast-food style taste we all crave.

It's thick, zesty and perfect for chicken nuggets (McNuggets), fries or burgers - a spicy kick just like the original McDonald's Cajun dipping sauce. And the best part? You can make it at home in just 5 minutes with simple pantry ingredients.

Groceries you'll need: Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make a Cajun Sauce recipe, all laid out and text overlaid.
  • Mayonnaise - The creamy base that makes the sauce rich and smooth.
  • Mustard & Ketchup - Classic combo for tang and color.
  • Cayenne and Hot Sauce - Brings the heat just like the Korean version.
  • Honey - Balances the spice with a touch of sweetness.
  • Nutritional Yeast - The secret ingredient that gives it that umami, almost cheesy depth.

See recipe card at the bottom of this post for quantities.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Ingredients needed to make a copycat McDonald's Cajun Sauce recipe all added to a mixing bowl.
Step 1: Add all the Cajun Sauce ingredients to a medium mixing bowl.
A large bowl of Cajun Sauce, with a whisk.
Step 2: Mix all ingredients together, then cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours (or more) to let the flavors come together.

Hint: Don't skip the 2 hour refrigeration, it really helps the flavors fuse together, and I can confidently say, it makes the sauce ten times better.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

Following is a list of variations and alternate ideas for substitutes that you could play with in this recipe:

  • Make it milder: Reduce cayenne and use mild hot sauce.
  • Make it vegan: Use vegan mayo and maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Add more smoke: Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika.
  • Balance: Add a little apple cider vinegar.
  • Try tomato paste for some more umami.

Mel's kitchen notes

Because it's so easy to make, whip up a large batch. You could find some great bottles online (I'll add a link below for inspiration) and give the Cajun Sauce to friends and family!
