Breadstick Rattlers Recipe Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Step 1: Take the pizza dough from the can and stretch out using fingers. Take a pizza wheel and cut even strips.

Step 2: Twist the strips into spirals and lay out on parchment paper-lined baking sheets.

Step 3: Brush with olive oil, sprinkle body with sesame seeds and poppy seeds and cut small triangles of olives to make the eyes on the snake's head.

Step 4: While the breadsticks are baking in the oven cut the red bell pepper into tiny little snake tongues.

Step 5: When you take the breadsticks out of the oven cut a little slit in the head of the snake, enough room to insert the little bell pepper tongues.

Step 6: Serve with your favorite dip in a small bowl on the side.

Hint: Jazz up the flavor of the spooky snake breadsticks by adding some salt, garlic, or favorite seasonings to the olive oil before brushing onto the breadstick twists.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Parmesan Cheese - sprinkle a little on with the olive oil.
  • Red Pepper - to add a little heat.
  • Store-bought Tomato Soup - offer these breadsticks with soup instead.
  • Black Sesame Seeds - instead of poppy seeds.
  • Pumpkin Seeds - for the eyes.
  • Candy Eyes - make it a little more fun.
  • Brown Butter - adds a little nuttiness.
  • Egg Wash - for a glossy finish.

How to store leftovers

Once the breadsticks have cooled, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for freshness, for up to 3 days.

  • Non-Stick Baking Sheets

Ingredients

  • 1 (13.8 Ounce) Can Refrigerated Classic Pizza Crust 1 can
  • 1 Each Red Bell Pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Olive Oil
  • 1 Pinch Poppy Seeds
  • 1 Pinch Sesame Seeds
  • 1 Each Black Olive

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Open the can of refrigerated pizza crust, push out until even.
    1 (13.8 Ounce) Can Refrigerated Classic Pizza Crust
  • Using a pizza wheel, cut the dough into even strips, about ½" wide.
  • Take each strip and twist into a 'snake-like shape'. Lay on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten one end of each just enough to make a head shape.
  • Brush the breadsticks with olive oil then sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds.
    2 teaspoons Olive Oil, 1 Pinch Poppy Seeds, 1 Pinch Sesame Seeds
  • Cut the olive into small pieces and arrange at the head of each snake (eyes).
    1 Each Black Olive
  • Bake in the oven for about 12 mintues, until golden brown.
  • While the breadstick rattlers are baking, cut the bell pepper to make small 'snake tongues'.
    1 Each Red Bell Pepper
  • Remove the breadsticks and while still warm slice a hole for a mouth on each rattler - then insert the tongue (bell pepper).
  • Serve with favorite dip, like marinara.

Notes

Flavor up the olive oil, add some salt, garlic, chili, any of your favorite spices, then brush on the breadsticks.
