These Halloween snacks have been a life saver for me. You know when the kids are so excited they don't want to eat - they've got their mind on trick or treating? How do you get them to eat something before they load up on candy?

These grilled cheese sandwiches are so cute and being Halloween themed the kids really love them. They don't mind chomping down on these before going out.

What makes this recipe so yummy

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe steps. For more detailed instructions visit the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Collage of four images showing how to assemble a halloween grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Step 1: Cut out Halloween shapes from the bread with cookie cutters.
  • Step 2: Assemble sandwiches.
  • Step 3: Melt ½ butter, place sandwiches in skillet and cook 2 minutes over medium-high heat. While they are cooking use the remaining butter and spread over bread on top.
  • Step 4: Cook from the top using your broiler for a couple minutes.

Hint: If you have a skillet that can go under your broiler even better. Use this so that you don't need to change to a baking sheet. You can just put the skillet straight under the broiler.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Tomato Soup - bulk up the meal a little and add a small bowl of tomato soup. Dipping the grilled cheese into it is delicious.
  • Olive Oil - if you prefer use olive oil instead of butter.
  • Pretzel Sticks - these can be used if you're trying to further decorate your sandwich.
  • Type of Cheese - we normally use American cheese as it's nice and melty and perfect for a grilled cheese. I'm not a fan of it being processed, but it is what it is. Use your favorite cheese for this, like
  • Type of Bread - we normally have honey wheat at home and use that, but you could use white bread, potato bread or whole wheat.

I used a medium griddle skillet for this Halloween grilled cheese recipe and a baking sheet for cooking under the broiler.

If you have a skillet that is oven proof even better.

How to store leftovers

Though not really meant to have leftovers, if you do happen to have some place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Warm up in the oven.

Mel's kitchen notes

I normally flip my grilled cheese in the pan, but due to it having an open center I don't want to lose the cheese in the pan so I finish that side off under the broiler.

Halloween Grilled Cheese

This is seriously the easiest Halloween snack ever - Halloween shapes cut out of one side of a grilled cheese sandwich - and the kids absolutely love it!

Ingredients

  • 2 Slices American Cheese
  • 4 Slices Honey Wheat Bread
  • 2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter

Instructions

  • Turn on your oven to broil.
  • Add the butter to a medium skillet and apply medium-high heat.
    2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • Using a Halloween Cookie Cutter cut out Halloween shapes from 2 slices of the bread. Keep the cut outs.
    4 Slices Honey Wheat Bread
  • Place a slice of cheese on top of the whole slice of bread then place the slice with a shape cut out on top. Place both cheese sandwiches in the skillet with the hot butter for about 2 minutes.
    2 Slices American Cheese
  • While that side of the bread is cooking take the remaining butter and spread on the top pieces of bread (as best you can). Once the underneath is cooked enough place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and place under the broiler and cook another 2 minutes. Keep your eye on the grilled cheese, you don't want it to burn.
  • Once browned enough remove from the oven and serve. If you have any kind of sparkle gel (or food color) or anything like that you can add two little dots for eyes. You could even use sliced black olives.

Notes

The bread and the cheese is totally flexible in this recipe. Choose your favorite of both.
If you don't have any Halloween cookie cutters and are quite artsy you could try scoring the shapes out of the bread with a small knife.
